FUNNY MONEY is a participatory art project that creates a temporary economy using the fictional currency Pe~ra.

Developed with more than 30 participating artists, the project transformed the venue into a theatre-like market with its own economic system. Visitors paid a fixed entrance fee but received a random amount and size of Pe~ra to spend inside. The currency could be given away, discarded, picked up, torn, traded, decorated, or assigned a value by its holder. As Pe~ra circulated between visitors and participating “residents,” its value and physical form continually changed, turning the event into an experiment around value, collective belief, and alternative economies.
